Our client, the Armed Forces Health Surveillance Branch (AFHSB), strives to be the central epidemiological resource and a global health surveillance proponent for the U.S. Armed Forces. The AFHSB provides timely, relevant, actionable, and comprehensive health surveillance information in order to promote, maintain, and enhance the health of military and military-associated populations.
We are seeking a Molecular Epidemiologist to support the Global Emerging Infections Surveillance Section (GEIS) of AFHSB. The incumbent will support the client and Department of Defense (DoD) decision-makers by assessing molecular testing and sequencing needs and coordinating such activities with GEIS partners around the world.
Responsibilities: Assist AFHSB/GEIS staff in proposal review and project evaluation for scientific and technical quality. Communicate regularly with GEIS partner organizations in the U.S. and overseas to understand their molecular and sequencing, analysis, and reporting needs. Support coordination of microbial sequencing initiatives and foster interactions across the GEIS network. Assist in the development of guidelines and protocols for molecular sequence data generation, analysis, and sharing. Perform aggregate data analysis in support of GEIS partners during the development of reports for DoD stakeholders and peer-reviewed publications. Identify next-generation sequencing (NGS) technologies, including laboratory analysis tools and make recommendations for their incorporation into the GEIS network. Provide molecular epidemiologic expertise and input at internal working groups and with international GEIS partners. Collaborate with interagency partners on molecular sequencing and analysis activities. Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications: Graduate degree in Epidemiology, Biostatistics, and/or Microbiology (Masters degree required), with coursework or practical experience in data analysis. Familiarity with basic epidemiologic techniques and NGS programming languages (SAS, R, Python, Perl, and/or SQL desired). Experience with molecular epidemiology, microbial genetic sequencing and data analysis, particularly using NGS platforms. Excellent organizational skills and strong oral and written communication skills. Experience in manipulating and analyzing data to support medical or public health decision-making.
Applicants selected will be subject to a U.S. Government security investigation and must meet eligibility requirements for Secret clearance.
