xcrptd is a free crowd-sourced literary journal that aims to provide readers with the stories they want to read. Here's how it works: Authors submit works show contact info . Along with the submission, the author selects a 300-word excerpt that will appear on the site. The excerpt can be from anywhere in the work. This will function as a preview of the work. Think of it like a trailer. Try to hook the reader. The excerpt must be from the work and is not intended to be a summary of the piece. Once the submission period is over, the excerpt will be posted on this website along with the title of the work and the author's name. Visitors to the site can vote for up to three excerpts from a single submission period. At the end of the voting period, the ten stories that received the most votes will be distributed in full as a free email newsletter to everyone that voted. Submissions will be reviewed to ensure adherence to basic guidelines, but they will remain otherwise unchanged. This is an experiment. This site is merely a way to put readers in touch with writers. No more, no less. The author retains full and complete rights to their work and may ask to have a piece removed at any time. I must note, however, that journals, magazines and such have different definitions about what does or does not count as a "published" a work. Please submit at your own discretion. Once it has been distributed, there's no going back. Kinda scary. But in a good way. In addition to having your work selected for inclusion in the newsletter at the end of the voting period, you can include a byline and any other contact information you would like to have appear along with your work. Or nothing at all. Use it as a space to promote an ebook or your blog. It could also be a good way to meet other authors, find a writing partner with similar interests, or simply a way to share your words with interested readers. It's all up to you. Submission Guidelines 3,000-7,500 words Must be a completed work. Submission must be accompanied by a name, the genre of the work (say whatever you want, but at least indicate whether the work is fiction or non-fiction), and an excerpt of your choice that does not exceed 300 words. Only one submission at a time. Send all submissions show contact info . Please send in .doc, .docx, .pdf, .odt, .txt, .rtf, or some other reasonable format. I'll review all copy for adherence to guidelines and general legibility. Grammar exists for a reason. Take pride in your work. I will accept submissions for the first issue through June 30. Voting will begin in July. (Dates are subject to change.) I will notify the authors when the excerpts are posted and do what I can to spread the word. But to really work, you'll need to tell everyone you know to vote. It's all about participation. Have your friends vote for you and then maybe check out a few other pieces while they're on the site.
