Resume and brief cover letter to: The Visitor Services Assistant position enriches the guest experience at the Sonoma County Museum (SCM) by greeting and receiving visitors, providing guests with exhibition and Museum information, actively selling memberships, handling phone calls, and facilitating shop sales. This position also staffs Museum receptions and other programs as requested. Principal Duties & Responsibilities Visitor Services Staff the Museum's front desk and gift shop to greet and engage visitors, sell memberships and shop items, and provide information about exhibitions and programs. Answers main telephone line to provide information and direct calls to other Museum staff. Work with volunteers to ensure attendants are watching over the objects on display. Opens and closes gallery exhibitions Thursday through Sunday. Maintains museum lobby and public spaces (including sculpture garden) keeping clean and organized -- seek assistance if needed (ie through facility volunteer, janitorial services, or landscape maintenance). Understand and communicate Museum mission, information on exhibitions and/or history of Sonoma County and nearby attractions. Track and survey all visitors to ensure accurate count for Museum daily attendance reports, tourism and marketing data. Maintains knowledge of local arts and cultural happenings (e.g. exhibitions at other institutions). Responsible for daily monies collected at the front desk and museum shop, including validation of funds between volunteers and staff. Prepares weekly deposit and reconciliation of transactions. Provide front desk security to ensure the safety of visitors and objects on display. Ask uncooperative visitors to exit the museum if needed. Complete other tasks as assigned such as folding and stuffing envelopes, spreadsheet and database updates. General Duties and Responsibilities: Act as a resource for public for visitor services related issues. Performs other duties as required. Cross-trains to provide back-up during periods of short staffing. Miscellaneous office duties include mailing, letter generation, copy projects as needed by staff. Works with Museum Staff in completing projects as assigned. May coordinate with volunteers to complete project. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Required: Education/Experience: A.A. required. Two or more years experience in a customer service, hospitality or retail environment. Non-profit experience preferred. Skills/Abilities: This position requires a high level of integrity and professionalism as well as an ability to work well with others. The position demands excellent verbal communications, a professional appearance and a natural ability to enthusiastically represent the Museum to the public. Engaging in conversation, promoting the Museum's programs and actively selling memberships are essential abilities. Solid math skills for cashiering and reconciling required. Typical physical demands: Sitting at desk for prolonged periods of time, walking, standing, climbing stairs, hearing (telephone, at meetings, etc.), lifting/carrying (up to 20 pounds), climbing up and down ladders, lifting and retrieving materials and objects, and reaching both above and below shoulder height. Equipment/Software used: Computer, telephone, copier, A-V equipment, 35 mm camera, PA system, fax machine, calculator, and other electronic office equipment. Occasional use of personal vehicle. Basic office software knowledge required. Quickbooks point of Sale, spreadsheets, Word, donor database and other software.
