FREEDOM CENTER NONVIOLENCE ● EQUALITY ● YOUTH ● ECOLOGY Communications Manager Contact: Karen Bohlke, The Institute for Community Leadership (ICL) in Kent, WA, and the Martin Luther King Jr. Freedom Center (Freedom Center), Oakland, CA seek a part-time Communications Manager to oversee Communication Plan, website and social media presence. ICL and the Freedom Center co-produce intensive leadership and civic engagement for youth from diverse racial and cultural communities. The curriculum, entitled Democracy Education, develops cultural power through reflection and action. Democracy Education promotes common-good values of interdependence, equity, other-interestedness, mutuality and the global pursuit of ecological sustainability. Summary of position: A 15-20 hour per week, part- time Communications Manager to work in rigorous CAMPAIGN STYLE environment. Position oversees agency communication strategies, branding, photography, videos, website, marketing approach, and social media presence. Assists in creation and distribution of communications with funders, press, general public, friends, and supporters. Support of agency fundraising is a part of this position. Position requires comfort with nonviolence leadership coaching as a tool to changing conduct, personal transformation, and social justice. Required Skill and Qualifications: Minimum of two years' experience developing and implementing a full range of communication strategies, and a BA or BA equivalent in related field. Strong writing, reading, and communication skills are required. Candidate must be a self-starter and an independent thinker with creative abilities. Experience with fundraising and special event planning are preferable. Must have hands on experience with creating e-newsletters, updates, and implementing strategies utilizing social media (FB, Twitter, YouTube, etc) and able to work with WordPress, Joomla, Vertical Response, InDesign, Salesforce and Photoshop . Components of the Job: • Affiliation with Martin Luther King Jr Freedom Center and the Institute for Community Leadership agency missions, content, and language, so as to assure connection between agency communications, programing, and purpose. Involves travel and hands-on activities with young people and staff. • Design and implement a comprehensive communications strategy that supports programmatic goals and builds identity awareness in order to maximize resource development to include social networking, website development, agency emails (updates and fund appeals) and special event (lectures, student travel and youth organizing) outreach/communication. • Assure protocols are established and utilized, working as team member with appropriate agency staff and youth in communications strategies. • Implement an organization-wide messaging and identity campaign. • Website updating, design and development assuring creative cutting edge presence for agency curriculum, pedagogy, and organizational brand. • Oversee development and execution of social media fundraising strategy across Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn and other (recommended) channels. • Oversee the development and delivery of all donor communications, appeals, including annual report, regular e-newsletters, and other forms of communication. • Oversee Press and Media outreach plan: develop relationships with, and a database of area and national press entities, maximizing community education and agency promotion opportunities. Maximize agency presence in the public eye, making use of diverse presence in local and national community bulletins, blogs and list serves (etc). • Write, distribute, and provide follow up on press releases, and press advisories. • Create and maintain program material for potential and current donors. • Develop multiple communication and engagement strategies (i.e. community events, oral and written communication, website information exchanges). • Strong computer skills (MS Office) and database or equivalent systems are required; keen attention to detail is a necessity. The ability to manage multiple tasks with various deadlines and the ability to prioritize are essential. • Archive of agency photos, videos and other graphics for easy access (by date and names) • Accessing marketing experts and coaching, staying abreast of changes in the field. • Assist in basic office IT system and protocol recommendations/trouble shooting. • Study and practice the principles of nonviolence so that one's own transformation and change is the basis for working with others. • Participation in weekly agency staff development trainings (Monday evenings 7-8:30pm). Salary/Benefits: 15-20 hours per week, hourly position (weekly hours will vary, and require flexibility). $15.00 -- 18.00/hour, doe. Candidate may work from home much of the time. Participation in weekly Monday evening (via video) meeting 7-8:30pm required.
