Legal Assistant (Austin, Texas) Reply to: Date: November 5, 2013 Full-time legal assistant: A small environmental law firm that represents non-profit organizations, local governmental entities, and community organizations is looking for a full-time legal assistant. This position requires independent and collaborative work related to litigation before state and federal administrative agencies, local governments, and within the court system. This position supports the lawyers. Responsibilities: The Legal Assistant will be expected to develop a strong knowledge of the firm's current cases. The Assistant will help develop technical and legal information (often, under deadlines), handle information requests from clients, occasionally represent the firm at meetings, and help coordinate office tasks to get these jobs done. A willingness to pick up slack from others in the office is essential. Duties: - Handles key paperwork for the cases, including maintaining files and documentary evidence for actions in court and at state and federal agencies and the Texas legislature; - Assists with technical and legal research (e.g., unearthing facts in agency records); - Reviews and prepares documents, including motions, pleadings and exhibits; - Other tasks as needed in a small office, including copying, faxing, and mailing. Qualifications: - A strong environmental ethic is required. - B.A. or B.S. and at least 2 years legal experience are required. - Must be able to manage several tasks at once, use sound judgment, set and follow priorities, and follow up on prioritized assignments. - Strong written and oral communication skills are essential. - Typing and strong computer skills. - Personal vehicle required. - Must be able to work at a fast pace and, always, plan ahead to meet deadlines.
