Send applicant question responses, resumes, and references to Position summary: This is an opportunity for a person with some experience in vegetarian cooking for large groups to bring his or her skills into a well-established retreat and seminar center that is dedicated to yoga, personal growth, and service. It is an ideal way to take a break from the traditional job market and experience life in a spiritual community while serving the community and its guests. IMPORTANT NOTE: This is a volunteer residential position located in the Santa Cruz Mountains at Mount Madonna Center. Room and board are provided, not as compensation but as a requirement and privilege of being a volunteer member of the community. A nominal stipend will also be provided. Job Description: The ideal applicant would look forward to being a member of a small team preparing main dishes for the residential community and guests, food prep, kitchen clean-up, recipe research, learning new skills, and directing new cooks. The MMC Kitchen is vegetarian: no meat, fish, poultry, eggs, garlic or onions are used in food preparation. Qualifications: Preference will be given to a vegetarian cook who has the interest and ability to cook for groups of 50-200. The position requires cooking for diverse age groups with attention to the dietary needs of all. The aim is to offer nutritious, delicious meals with particular emphasis on presentation. Ability is required to follow recipes as well as to assist in researching new recipes. Knowledge of vegetarian ethnic cuisine is an asset. Flexibility is required to accommodate our changeable community schedule. The applicant must be able to engage in positive interaction with other cooks and staff, including taking and giving directions. The applicant will have the opportunity to train in the operation of a well-equipped kitchen, as well as learn and develop culinary skills which specifically relate to large groups and special dietary needs. The Community: Mount Madonna Center ( In addition to a meaningful position, the community offers staff and residents regular yoga classes, meditation classes, guest lectures, hiking trails, a swimming lake, and hot tub and athletic facilities. Our onsite cafe offers an informal gathering place with a panoramic view of Monterey Bay. As a member of our community you may engage in our activities including celebrations, work, and play. This is an opportunity to experience life in a spiritually oriented community and use your talents in the kitchen. The community food service is vegetarian and we ask everyone to abide by the vegetarian guidelines while on the property. Stipend and Position Duration: The position is a volunteer position that includes a nominal stipend of $750/month. The position is for 36 hours of kitchen duties and 4 hours devoted to learning and discussing community living, personal growth, and yoga. The environment requires no drugs, alcohol, or cigarette smoking while on the property. Sunday duties are a requirement and one full day off is assured.
