To apply, email your resume to: Job Title: Deli Prep Cook Reports to: Store Chef Status: Hourly/Non-Exempt Schedule: Varied Overview: The Deli Prep Cook is responsible for preparing and cooking healthy, fresh, flavorful meals highlighting the seasonal bounty while maintaining efficient and accurate stocking, cleaning, and rotation of product. Must be self-motivated, and carry a sense of ownership for the department including safe food handling practices that are maintained and adhered to at all times. Be able to work a variety of shifts within the Deli and have flexibility with shift needs. Job Functions: Daily Responsibilities Orders, receives, stocks and stores all product according to procedure. Maintains a clean, safe work area by frequently cleaning all equipment, including but not limited to work space, coolers, utensils, cutting boards, etc. . . Completes assigned duties throughout the day with the highest level of efficiency possible. Regularly rotates and checks all "pull dates" of kitchen prep ingredients. Accurately records product/ingredient items to be donated. Communicates inventory levels to facilitate accurate and timely ordering. Engages customers and develops relationships to providing exceptional customer service. Operates slicer, wrapping and cooking equipment. Contributes to the organization being financially fit in order to grow the business and benefit our communities. Practices open, positive communication and conflict resolution with co-workers. Observes shift operating hours at all times as scheduled. Maintains "grab and go" program including fresh soup, salad & yogurt bar. Attends to cleaning all dishes, pans, etc... as needed. Food Preparation Prepares fresh "grab and go meals" and deli offerings while adhering to strict company portions and guidelines to ensure consistency. Performs food prep duties and monitors food rotation. Follows daily production schedule. Assists with special orders and catering, as assigned, ensuring menu items meet quality standards and are delivered on time. Quality & Safety Standards Recognizes and handles ingredients in accordance with common Food Handler's Guidelines. Maintains integrity of in-house quality, wholesome, fresh and value added products while helping the department meet margin goals. Addresses food safety concerns immediately with regard to the products in the department, equipment and food health concerns. Maintains equipment and supplies. Observes the regular HAACP and temperature logs within coolers and cases and immediately reports failures to store management. Follows quality control and rotation guidelines. Maintains compost and recycling practices. Understands the need to be financially fit in order to grow the business and benefit our communities. Qualifications and Experience Minimum of one (1) year of experience cooking in the retail grocery industry. Demonstrates proficient knife skills. Proven leadership, communication and collaboration skills. Demonstrates interest in researching trends and best practices to provide education and efficiencies for improved results that challenges standard practices. Values community, sustainability, passion for food and fun. Experience with start-up business "outside the box" thinking and innovation as well as nutrition knowledge a plus. Ability to travel regularly throughout the Portland area (mileage reimbursed). Physical Requirements The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by a staff member to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. Regularly working in areas that can be wet and slippery. Regularly required to stand, bend, climb and reach. Repetitive arm and hand movements, manual dexterity to wrap, package and stock product up to 30 pounds. Requires standing for prolonged periods of time, walking, and climbing on a step stool. Exposure to extreme temperature changes. Requires vision for working with sharp knives, slicer, box cutter and related equipment will need to determine spoiled or damaged product. We will have a great deli with lots of delicious grab-n-go foods cooked from scratch along with a small produce, grocery, beer and wine department-pretty much everything the big guys have but since we are smaller, we only have room for the good stuff!
