CONTACT: Ari Joseph #SleepForPeace Coordinator, Hostelling International New York 212 932 2300, ext. 150 Hostelling International-USA (HI-USA) announces a Call to Artists WHAT: "#SleepForPeace" -- Scholarship Fundraiser for HI-USA WHEN: Saturday, September 21st, International Day of Peace, (12:00 pm -- 5:00 pm) WHERE: Hostelling International -- New York, 891 Amsterdam Avenue "#SleepForPeace" is a nationwide initiative by Hostelling International USA to donate $1 of every overnight stay at an HIUSA hostel during International Day of Peace, September 21st, 2013. Hostelling International New York (located in the historic Hunt building on 103rd St and Amsterdam Avenue) would like to invite all New York City and area artists to share their artistic expression in celebration of HI-USA's #SleepForPeace campaign. Using provided canvasses, artists are tasked with creating a piece that explores the theme of travel, connecting communities and the importance of intercultural exchange. Artists must confirm their participation by Sunday, September 7, 2013 by emailing #SleepForPeace, Ari Joseph at . No portfolio of previous work is required. Participating artists will be contacted by return email the following week and instructed on how they can pick-up their blank canvass provided at no charge by HI-USA. All submissions received by September 7, 2013 will be reviewed and assessed in accordance with the above theme and then displayed for public view during the September 21st Open House event. All artists will also have the opportunity to donate their finished canvass for permanent display and named recognition at the HI-New York hostel, which hosts over 100,000 guests from around the world each year. Since 1934, HI-USA has facilitated worldwide travel and personal growth through its network of safe, comfortable and affordable hostels and its programs promoting cross-cultural education and understanding. Hostels offer basic accommodations designed to encourage interaction and camaraderie among travelers of all ages and origins. Many US hostels are historic properties, often operated in partnership with governments or nonprofit organizations. Hostels are located near cultural centers, historical sites and recreational areas. Community has always been an important part of hostelling. Hostels and programs foster kinship among the mosaic of travelers. Community volunteers and activities enrich the traveler's stay, encouraging lively engagement among hostel users and local residents alike. #SleepForPeace is a brand new initiative for Hostelling International USA, and one that supports our mission of bringing people together through travel and community.
