Vascular Surgeon
Department Of Veterans Affairs
Veterans Health Administration
VA Maine Healthcare System, Augusta, Maine

The VA Maine Healthcare System is expanding its Vascular Surgery Program and the Surgical Department is looking for an energetic Vascular Surgeon who is also familiar with General Surgical procedures. The Surgical and Radiology Departments are combining to construct a state of the art Vascular Surgical Suite/Laboratory and the present time, the Vascular Program consists of two mid-level providers who do vascular assessments in conjunction with VA Boston Healthcare System. We are coordinating our surgical cases with the Vascular Surgery Department at the Boston VA Healthcare System but current plans call for the department to eventually be staffed by two vascular surgeons, two vascular technicians, and two vascular mid-level providers that would do assessments and see pre and postoperative patients.

You will be in on the "ground floor" and have a great deal to say in the organization of the department from its inception. At the start of the program you may also have some responsibilities with the General Surgery Department and take call with the General Surgeon. It is anticipated that the Vascular Surgery Program would start with endovascular work and have less emphasis on open vascular surgical repairs.

VA Maine Healthcare System serves approximately 40,000 Maine veterans and the main campus is in Augusta with nine outpatient clinics situated throughout the state. The vascular surgeon is not expected to travel to any of the outpatient clinics. The hospital has a modern operating room and 67 acute care beds and, there are 65 skilled longer stay beds, a 25-bed Dementia Unit, and a Hospice Care Unit. The hospital, itself, is well maintained for its historic value. It sets on 500+ acres and is the oldest veterans' facility in the United States.

The Vascular Surgery section falls under the Department of Surgery with the Chief of the Vascular Surgery Section reporting directly to the Chief of Surgical Services. Other members of the Vascular Surgery Department will report directly to the Chief of Vascular Surgery.

You will be responsible for initial evaluation and overall workups, history & physicals, and admission of vascular surgery patients as needed and providing patients with education concerning their disease state and expected treatment regimen. Vascular surgical procedures will include, but not be limited to: carotid endarterectomy and vascular procedures of the iliofemoral system and aorta as well as renal dialysis access. There may, at times, be a requirement for knowledge of general surgical procedures which are not complicated and may include appendectomy, cholecystectomy and herniorrhaphy. The Department of Veterans' Affairs requires daily notes on each patient's chart which are entered electronically and The Department of Veterans' Affairs endorses an electrical or paperless medical record system. You will have the opportunity to participate in various hospital committees. It is estimated that the vascular surgeon's position will be approximately 95% clinical and 5% administrative.

An unrestricted US license (any state) is required and, you will be expected to maintain your CME requirements in order to maintain your license and specialized certification. You’ll work effectively with the patients and coworkers and treat other healthcare professionals and patients' family with respect and dignity.

You’ll enjoy the opportunity to as a consultant to other medical center staff and trainees and, train medical students, medical residents, and midlevel providers as VA Maine Healthcare System is peripherally involved with University of New England, School of Osteopathy, TUFTS University Medical School, Harvard University post graduate training program for ophthalmology.
