Responsibilities include the following: - Performs nursing care and skills (e.g., invasive monitoring, life support equipment, data gathering devices, etc.) - Assists with invasive medical/surgical procedures. - Performs data collection as well as records observations. - Recognizes changes in patient condition indicative of complications. - Recognizes need for emergency measures and advanced life support. - Implements therapy to algorithm, reports changes as appropriate. - Assists with and handles animal specimens and cadavers. - Performs post-operative recovery care for animals. - Conducts daily animal health checks for animals to include daily census, observing animals for indications of poor health or injury, and conditions of animal housing. Reports and takes steps to treat or correct any deficiencies noted. - Performs basic preoperative preparation of animals to include clipping and scrubbing of surgical sites. - Monitors basic animal vital signs to include taking temperature, pulse, and respiration rate before surgery, during surgery, and during recovery from surgery. - Performs animal anesthesia induction, perioperative monitoring, and recovery. - Helps with cleaning of facilities and medical equipment as needed. - Performs basic laboratory procedures (e.g. fecal analysis, urinalysis, PCV, etc.) - Performs supportive administrative duties as needed (e.g. medical records review, supply purchase requests, minor budget audits, etc.) - Performs euthanasia and necropsy of laboratory animals as required
Requirements: - Requires minimum of 2-year veterinary technology degree or equivalent experience. - Certification as a registered or certified veterinary technician or animal health technician (RVT/CVT/AHT) is desired. College degree is desired. - Knowledge of animal care techniques and procedures (protocol methodology) is required and research experience is desired. - Proficiency in basic clinical laboratory skills including ability to follow standardized orders, execute timed events and administration of research test articles. - Animal care and research responsibilities require long periods of walking and standing and the ability to lift or otherwise move animal subjects. - Ability to bend, stoop and climb is necessary in ensuring data is accurately collected. - Possess verbal and written communications skills necessary to scientific standard. - AALAS Certification is highly encouraged. (ALAT, LAT, LATG, CMAR)
