Organization Description
United Council of UW Students is a coalition of 22 UW campuses, representing over 150,000 undergraduate, graduate, and professional students. Founded in 1960, United Council is a non-partisan, non-profit, student-directed organization committed to enhancing the quality of student life and protecting access to higher education in Wisconsin. United Council's mission is to represent all students of the University of Wisconsin System and advocate for them on issues of higher education pertaining to value, quality, and the student experience.

General Position Description:
The Government Relations Director serves as United Council’s lead lobbyist and works to educate, organize, and represent United Council’s legislative agenda and Policy Platform. This position works to strengthen and protect student rights ranging from shared governance to academic affairs to student fee autonomy.

Government Relations Director Responsibilities:
• Facilitate efforts of students to be heard, supported, and enabled to effect change on their desired initiatives and campaigns
• Serve as lead lobbyist for United Council and complete organization’s reporting of lobby activities.
• Build positive working relationships and serve as the organization’s liaison with legislative offices and state agency staff, which include DOA, GAB, DPI, HEAB, WTCS, UW System Administration and Board of Regents.
• Coordinate, with the field director, organizational recruitment and participation efforts for student populations to United Council activities, campaigns, and events.
• Develop and facilitate workshops and trainings related to United Council’s statewide campaigns and other issue areas related to legislative matters; shared governance; academic affairs; and equity, diversity, and inclusion.
• Develop and distribute policy papers and other communication designed to advocate for United Council’s legislative priorities.
• Research, investigate and discuss issues of higher education on the national, state, UW System and campus level.
• Track, compile, assess and summarize policy analysis and reports conducted by organizations and partners.
Organizational Responsibilities
• Recruit, engage, and train students, student governments and student organizations around United Council’s campaigns and initiatives.
• Uphold the organization’s governing documents including Corporate Bylaws and Policy Platform.
• Include traditionally underrepresented identity issues in all aspects of job performance.
• Attend and organize statewide meetings and conferences.
• Assist students and UC staff members in on-campus United Council membership campaigns and statewide campaigns.
• Frequent in-state travel, weekend work, and late hours.

Recommended Skills and Knowledge
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
• Familiarity with grassroots organizing and advocacy.
• Familiarity with state and national legislative processes, particularly Wisconsin.
• Familiarity with student shared governance within the UW System.
• Familiarity with the University of Wisconsin System or similar higher education systems.
• Experience working with students, student organizations, and diverse populations and identity groups.
• Ability to read and comprehend case law and legislative drafting materials.
• Experience working on issue based campaigns and initiatives.
• Experience working collaboratively and independently in a variety of situations.
• Ability to multi-task in a fast-paced work environment and adapt to a variety of situations.
• Experience managing small groups of individuals or students is greatly preferred, but not required.
• Must have valid drivers license, personal car not necessary
• Bachelor’s degree preferred, but not required.
