United Planning Organization’s Youth Services Division is seeking talented and energetic instructors to be a part of the Providing Opportunities with Educational Readiness (P.O.W.E.R.) 2011 Summer Program. Instructors are needed to develop and teach a curriculum in the following subject areas: Math, English, Science, Social Studies, and Spanish; curricula should emphasize the theme of “Architectural Arts”. Instructors will be brought in as consultants to establish a fun and engaging educational atmosphere where students will have the opportunity to fulfill their potential for intellectual, emotional, and psychological growth.

Classrooms will be comprised of approximately twenty rising 9th grade students who attend Ward 8 DC public or charter schools. Consultants will also be responsible for organizing and implementing an instructional program that will result in students achieving academic success in accordance with DCPS standards and program outcomes. Teaching strategies that respond to the auditory, kinesthetic, and visual learning styles of the students are preferred. Access to computer labs, projectors, and the campus library can be arranged.

Instructors will work closely with the P.O.W.E.R. Program Coordinator and Case Manager. Twenty seven (27) days of instruction will take place on the campus of American University and will be conducted over a seven week period beginning June 27, 2011 and ending August 12, 2011. Program activities will take place on Mon, Tues, Thur, & Fri between the hours of 9:00 am and 3:15 pm. Instruction will take place Mon – Thur during the last week of program. There is no program on Monday, July 4th, in observance of Independence Day.

Services Desired
The duties and responsibilities of the Consultant will be as follows:
• Facilitate two 55 minute sessions for each scheduled program date (27 total)
• Develop a curriculum based on DCPS grade level standards to guide the learning process to help students achieve program objectives
• Coordinate 1 field trip activity to correlate with classroom lessons
• Maintain a classroom atmosphere conducive to learning
• Implement diagnostic and progress measures (pre, post, and interim assessments)
• Participate in team meetings, as necessary
• Select and use effective instructional methods and learning materials
• Establish a cooperative relationship with all assigned students
• Maintain open lines of communication with the P.O.W.E.R. staff
• Work collaboratively to achieve the overall purposes of the P.O.W.E.R. Program

Qualifications and Criteria
The following items will be used to determine qualification and are required to fulfill the services desired:

• Bachelors degree or higher from an accredited institution
• Background in Education with relevant teaching experience
• Experience working/teaching in Title I schools
• Knowledge of relevant trends in education
• Experience working with DC Public Schools preferred

Submission Requirements
Please submit the following items for consideration:

 Transmittal letter stating an understanding of the work to be done and the commitment to perform the work within the designated time period
 Statement of Work: please identify your proposed theme, one recommended book to be used, and provide a sample lesson plan
 Current resume along with relevant teaching credentials and/or certifications
 Cost of Service – a breakdown of the cost as well as a total contract not to exceed amount must be provided

Other Requirements
Consultants must successfully pass an FBI background screening.
