Seriously. There’s more to it than that, of course — like life itself, things are never completely simple when lawyers are involved! — but read on.
What’s the angle?
Why would a lawyer give anything away? That’s easy. I’m an old lawyer with a young business. I want “buzz.” I want you to read this blog and my website, so you can see my articles about divorce and separation, and pass them on. I want you to be impressed with what I can offer you, so that you hire me at my regular rate if you need additional services. I want you to tell your friends that I am someone who can help them out of a tight spot and then point the way ahead. I am willing to give up a week’s worth of profit for more business down the line.
What am I giving away?
I am giving away two of my services:
Uncontested, no-fault divorce services. If all you need is the piece of paper that says you are no longer married, and if your spouse is on board with this, I will process your divorce from beginning to end for no fee at all. You still have to pay the filing fees that the court will charge — I’m not paying you to get divorced, either! — but I make nothing on the deal.
Initial one-hour office consultation. If you need more guidance than a ten-minute telephone call can offer (for example, there are issues arising from separation or the prospect of separation, child custody, and support), we will meet for an hour in my office to go over your whole situation, identify your issues and map out your options. I try to put the rug back under your feet, and by the time we are done I want you to have answers to as many questions as can be answered at this time, including questions you might not have thought to ask. I will usually charge you one hour’s time for this meeting… but not this time.
What do I have to do?
Call me between Sunday, January 23, 2011 at 12:01 a.m. and Sunday, January 30, 2011 at 11:59 p.m. to set up your uncontested divorce, or to make an appointment for an office consultation, and mention this blog. You can leave a voice mail message, or talk to me directly. The service can happen after the deadline, but the call must come before it!
Okay, what’s the catch?
No catch at all, just two additional conditions and a suggestion:
• I am only giving away what I say I am giving away. Anything else that you might need from me comes at my regular rate.
• You must have resided in Pennsylvania for at least the last six months.
• I ask (but do not require) that you post a comment to this blog entry after we talk, to tell folks what you think of me, positive or negative.
If you have any questions about this, feel free to post them as comments to my blog at spousealouse (dot) wordpress (dot) com/2011/01/16/free-divorces or send me an email, and I will respond.
