National Mentoring Month Focuses on Local Initiatives
YouthBuild of Northern Kentucky, under the umbrella of The Northern Kentucky Community Action Commission is seeking mentors to connect with its 16-18 year old trainees in the Program. This opportunity comes at an ideal time to volunteer as January is National Mentoring Month - as declared by President Barack Obama. This January marks the 10th anniversary of the event.
The local YouthBuild program, based in Northern Kentucky, provides at-risk and disadvantaged area youth the opportunity to change the course of their lives through GED study, workforce training, Life Skills instruction, and the provision of significant service to the Community. YouthBuild NKy has also recently been recognized as the first AmeriCorps Youth Corps in the State of Kentucky by the Kentucky Commission on Community Volunteerism & Service.
The mentoring component becomes a part of YouthBuild NKy’s successful three-year old effort through a Grant from the YouthBuild USA National Mentoring Alliance and The United States Department of Justice Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention.
The need for individual mentors guiding young people such as YouthBuild NKy’s Hired Hand Participants has, until now, gone unmet. Most formal mentoring program relationships are targeted to mentee youth between the ages of 8-14. YouthBuild offers caring adults the opportunity to “save a life” through mentoring a young adult at a critical age in their life. Mentoring a YouthBuild trainee allows members of the community to positively impact the life of a local young adult.
This call to action responds directly to President Obama’s challenge:
“Across our nation, mentors steer our youth through challenging times and support their journey into adulthood. During National Mentoring Month, we honor these important individuals who unlock the potential and nurture the talent of our country, and we encourage more Americans to reach out and mentor young people in their community.”
Mentors for YouthBuild of Northern Kentucky should be at least 21 years old, and able to pass a standard background check.
If interested in having a vital role in changing a young adult’s life for the better, please contact YouthBuild Program Manager, Kristine Frech.
