The Ewing Marion Kauffman School

The Kauffman School will enroll 100 fifth-graders in its first year and grow one grade per year thereafter, ultimately serving grades five through twelve. Teachers in the Kauffman School’s inaugural fifth grade classrooms will not be elementary school teachers, but rather subject teachers in accordance with a middle school model. The target population is urban students residing in low-income households. The Kauffman School is inspired and supported by the Ewing Marion Kauffman Foundation.

Our approach to ensure every student is prepared to successfully complete college includes:

• A longer school year and longer school day.
• More instructional time in core subjects and extra teacher support.
• Consistent systems and procedures in all classrooms.
• Homework and reading assigned every night to every student.
• Challenging and inspiring students as they prepare for college and life.

Director of Special Education’s Primary Responsibilities:
The Kauffman School seeks an exceptional individual to serve as its founding Director of Special Education. The Director of Special Education should be passionate about supporting students who are at-risk for academic underperformance due to emotional and/or physical challenges so that they can succeed in the school’s rigorous academic program. The Director of Special Education will serve as the school’s primary agent for providing academic, emotional, and physical services to students who require additional support to thrive within the school’s academic program.

Student Identification and Evaluation

• Ensure compliance with all local, state, and Federal special education laws and regulations;
• Ensure that all students receive the educational services they need to succeed;
• Conduct and/or coordinate “Child Find” activities in accordance with all applicable laws;
• Develop and administer family questionnaire to Identify incoming students’ special education needs;
• Develop and administer intake assessments, and review the results to identify special education needs among new students;
• Work with families, students, and appropriate administrative or governmental resources to create and revise IEPs when appropriate;
• Schedule, coordinate, and lead team and pre-referral meetings;
• Conduct academic testing as part of the evaluation process.

Working with Staff and in Classrooms

• Coordinate and conduct classroom observations and testing (i.e. psychological) as needed;
• Ensure that all regular education teachers know and understand all classroom accommodations required by IEPs;
• Deliver one-on-one, small group, and whole class instruction as appropriate;
• Contribute to the design of curriculum materials;
• Design and administer rigorous, standards-based assessments – using assessment data to refine curriculum and instruction;
• Collaborate with other teachers, other school staff, and administrators to ensure all Kauffman School students receive the services, attention, and level of expectation necessary to be successful;
• Identify appropriate trainings and professional development opportunities for school staff;
• Coordinate any contracted services and hold service providers accountable for student results;
• Maintain student records regarding special education issues and preparing reports for regulatory agencies.

Desired Qualifications:
• At least three years of relevant experience serving students with disabilities preferred;
• Bachelor’s degree required, Master’s degree in Special Education preferred;
• Background in building literacy in special populations;
• Strong understanding of special education identification, assessment, support, and reporting;
• Deep knowledge of Missouri laws and regulations pertaining to special education;
• Experience working with English Language Learners (preferred);
• Relentless focus on student results;
• Able and willing to work extended school day hours and extended school year days;
• Effectively prioritizes work and meets deadlines; is organized; manages multiple assignments; follows assignments through to completion; responds quickly to requests for information and assistance;
• Maintains confidential and sensitive information, with respect to both school and student level data and internal staff members.
