Symphony Space, a multi-disciplinary performing arts organization, seeks an Events Intern whose focus will be the Thalia Café. The Thalia Café (named after the Thalia theatre, the more intimate of Symphony Space’s two stages), provides all catering services at Symphony Space, and operates as a Cafe offering a full bar and small plated food to the general public and to patrons of Symphony Space. The Thalia Café also presents live performances ranging from spoken word to music to comedy as well as specialty events, such as wine tastings. The Thalia Café recently reopened under Symphony Space management, having previously been operated by outside vendors, thus, making this internship an excellent opportunity to be an important part of an exciting start-up enterprise within the context of a first-rate non-profit performing arts center. The Events Intern reports to our Hospitality Manager, but also works closely with our Marketing Department and Artistic Director. The Intern will have exposure to all aspects of running the Cafe but will focus his/her efforts on:
-booking and following-up on parties to be held at the Café and other locations in the facility
-researching and booking performers for live performances in the Cafe and possibly in one of Symphony Space's theatres
-assisting in marketing efforts and promotional offers, including updating the Café’s website; keeping the Café well connected with the broad social media world (Facebook, Twitter, blogging, etc); creating and distributing fliers; mailings, newsletters, etc.
-performing administrative tasks, including preparing schedules, processing and maintaining financial files.
The Events Intern will have the opportunity to join the other performing arts interns at Symphony Space in weekly meetings with arts administrators from both inside the institution and from other institutions around the City.
Candidates with a strong interest in event planning, marketing, booking live performances or hospitality management will find this internship of most interest. Computer skills, especially familiarity with Word and Excel, are helpful. Enthusiasm, follow-through, attention to detail and an ability to work well with a variety of people are required. Intern must be at least 18 years old.
A stipend of $66.66/week for 20 hours/week is offered. Stipend is pro-rated for less hours. Schedule will include some evening hours.
Symphony Space is located at 95th Street and Broadway in Manhattan, across the street from the #1, 2, 3 subways. We offer more than 500 events a year in music, dance, film, family programming and literature in performance. The Intern is welcome to attend performances at Symphony Space free of charge. Please send letter and resume with Events Internship in the subject line to:
