Volunteers are needed to train as Advocates for Sexual Assault Response Services of Southern Maine’s (SARSSM) 24-hour Crisis & Support Line.

Applications are now being taken for a free training session, beginning Wednesday, September 29th, and concluding Wednesday, October 20th. Held on Monday and Wednesday evenings from 6 to 9 p.m., and two Saturdays (9 a.m. to 4 p.m.), the comprehensive training covers topics such as: the brain’s response to trauma; communication and listening skills; and victim advocacy. “If you are someone who is willing to listen, who wants to have a rewarding experience, who cares and who wants to make a difference, this is a wonderful opportunity,” says Charlene Powell, SARSSM’s Support Program Manager.

The 24-hour Crisis & Support Line assists callers in York and Cumberland counties. Volunteer Advocates work from home, have flexible hours, choose their shifts and do not need any experience. SARSSM is thrilled to announce its new combined online and classroom training format in partnership with RAINN (Rape Abuse Incest National Network). This new format is designed to enable people who need more flexibility in the training schedule to participate.

SARSSM, Maine’s oldest and largest sexual assault crisis center, has been supporting victim/survivors and providing awareness and prevention programs for 36 years, and is known as the clearinghouse for information and services to the community.

For an application or additional information call 1-800-313-9900. All applications must be received by September 20th.
