The Community HealthCorps program is the largest health-focused, national AmeriCorps program that promotes health care for America’s underserved while developing tomorrow’s healthcare workforce. The mission is to improve healthcare access and enhance workforce development through community health center sponsored AmeriCorps members. HealthCorps members serve for a minimum of 1,700 hours over the course of 10-12 months.

Through CHCACT, HealthCorps members will be placed throughout Connecticut at federally qualified health centers (FQHCs). While there, HealthCorps members will:
- Learn and perform activities that enhance services provided by community health centers;
- Assist community health center patients who do not have access to a medical home through education and enrollment in health insurance;
- Work with patients to ensure they keep appointments and follow treatment plans to better use health care services;
- Provide health educate to help patients understand how to live a healthy lifestyle;
- Attend required trainings, orientation sessions, and meetings.

Health centers in Connecticut are seeking HealthCorps members to improve patient utilization of services, perform community outreach, provide screenings and health education, and help patients navigate the health care system, among other activities.

HealthCorps members enjoy a number of benefits including:
- Bi-weekly living allowance stipend of $453.77 (before taxes)
- Health insurance coverage
- Child care (if eligible)
- Student loan forbearance
- Educational award of $5,350 at the conclusion of service.

An applicant to the HealthCorps program must:
- Be a U.S. citizen, U.S. National or a lawful permanent resident.
- Be 18 years or older.
- Have a high school diploma or a GED, or agree to obtain a high school diploma or its equivalent before graduating from this program.

CHCACT highly values applicants who are:
- Bilingual in English and Spanish.
- Committed to public health, community outreach, or community health.
- Able to have access to reliable transportation.
