2010 & 2011 Season

“This year’s theatrical productions, drawn from different styles and set in varying time periods, have in common a sense of humor. We start with Table Manners, which is from a cycle of plays known as The Norman Conquests. Interestingly, the recent Tony Award winning revival was co-produced by Jennifer Issacson, 2006 alumna of William and Mary Theatre. Our musical this year is everybody’s favorite – Oklahoma. The spring productions offer something new to Williamsburg and are just as exciting. The absurdist comedy, Rhinoceros focuses on issues of conformity. What do you do when everyone in your town but you becomes a rhinoceros? And finally, the Restoration play, The Rover, will carry the audience to the days of King Charles II and his Cavaliers during Carnival with masks galore and plenty of sword play.” Director of Theatre Laurie Wolf

Table Manners by Alan Ayckbourn. Directed by Christopher Owens
Winner of the 2009 Tony Award for Best Revival, this hilarious British comedy follows the romantic escapades of Norman, one of the most unlikely Don Juan's you'll ever meet. We're back in the late 1970's in the dining room of this country home where the action is anything but formal. Ayckbourn has often been termed "the British Neil Simon" for his prolific comic imagination and this farce will clearly show you why.

Rhinoceros by Eugene Lonesco Directed by Laurie Wolf
Eugene Ionesco's Rhinoceros is a Theatre of the Absurd polemic against the dangers of blindly accepting the prevailing political scheme. Originally written following the atrocities of the Nazi occupation in Europe, Rhinoceros explores the nature of the human soul and how one's humanity and sense of self is sacrificed in the desire to 'go along with the herd,' and 'play it safe.' Rhinoceros is applicable to any extremist ideology - as a member of the general population, how long could you hold out?
