Research Project On Fraternal Twin Loss

As a 4th year doctoral student in Clinical Psychology at the California School of Professional Psychology at Alliant International University, San Diego, I am seeking participants for my doctoral dissertation on the relationship quality and grief experience of fraternal twins whose co-twin has died.

The twin relationship has been described as one of the most unique bonds that siblings can establish and yet the death of one’s co-twin is an area of grief and bereavement that has yet to be fully explored. Exploration into the fraternal twin relationship is even less explored. This research project attempts to explore the grief experience of fraternal twins who have lost their fraternal twin in order to increase understanding of the impact that such a devastating event can have on an individual.

If you, or someone you know, have experienced such a loss, please feel free to call, or let them know about this study.

Participation entails a short telephone screening to determine whether you meet criteria for this study, filing out some forms, and partaking in an in-person interview that will be audio taped and last approximately two hours. The information you provide is strictly confidential, and your identity will not be revealed.

To participate you must:
o Be a fraternal twin
o Be at least 18 years of age
o Experienced the death of their twin during adolescence or older (13 years old or older).

Your participation is:
o Voluntary and you may withdraw participation at any time
o Confidential and your privacy will be maintained
o Compensation will be a $20.00 gift certificate to Target for participation in the study

This study has been approved by the Institutional Review Board at the California School of Professional Psychology (CSPP) at Alliant International University and will be supervised by faculty at CSPP. To be considered for participation in this study, please contact David L. Broderick, M.A. at 619-977-6986 and leave a message including the following information:

o Your name and age
o Your phone number
o The age at which your twin passed away

Thank you for your interest and consideration,

David L. Broderick, M.A.
