Job Description
The Cytogenetics Technologist is responsible for performing all aspects of testing in a clinical Cytogenetics/FISH Laboratory. They evaluate and introduce new material, methods, and equipment to help determine the feasibility and/or adaptability for clinical cytogenetic /FISH studies. They assist supervisors in the development of new technologies and participate in documenting and implementing Quality Assurance (QA)/ Quality Control (QC)/Quality Inventory (QI) procedures. Performs scanning and microscope analysis of chromosomes of a variety of cytogenetic specimens. Conducts imaging, karyotyping, tissue culture, and harvesting of specimens.
1. Follows the laboratory procedures for specimen handling and processing, test analyses, reporting and maintaining records of patient test results.
2. Performs and documents proficiency testing (PT) samples are tested in the same manner as patient specimens.
3. Adheres to the laboratory’s quality control policies, documents all quality control activities, instrument and procedural calibrations and maintenance performed.
4. Follows the laboratory’s established policies and procedures whenever test systems are not within the laboratory’s established acceptable level of performance.
5. Demonstrates capability of identifying problems that may adversely affect test performance or reporting of test results and must either correct the problems or immediately notify the General Supervisor, technical Supervisor, or Laboratory Director.
6. Documents all corrective actions taken when test systems deviate from the laboratory’s established performance specifications.
7. Reports all concerns of test quality and/or patient safety to a Supervisor or Safety Officer.
8. Demonstrates ability to perform all tasks required by a Technologist I and II.
9. Assesses chromosome/slide quality and selects conditions for improvement to ensure maximum quality.
10. Consistently and independently performs the most complex levels of clinical laboratory testing.
11. Determines the need for further studies to complete a diagnosis with the appropriate authority.
12. Demonstrates the ability to detect and correct technical and operational problems.
13. Is able to accurately enter case results into the reporting system for review by the Director.
14. Conducts on-the-job training for subordinate levels.
15. Exhibits skill and proficiency in applying technical principles and/or techniques of cytogenetics and/or FISH.
16. Initiates troubleshooting steps to evaluate testing failures and other technical problems.
17. Assists in review of data for quality assurance.
18. Establishes and maintains sample cultures.
19. Harvests cultures, prepares, and bands slides or applies FISH probes and slide processing.
20. Accurate microscope analysis of cells and ISCN designations.
21. Utilizes imaging equipment for final review of cases.
22. Performs and documents preventative maintenance of lab equipment.
23. Assists in review of data for quality assurance.
24. Performs routine procedures including recording sample and patient information.
25. Sets up cultures and harvests amniotic fluid, peripheral blood and bone marrow samples.
26. Scans slides, counts chromosomes and karyotype cells at the microscopic level on amniotic fluid, peripheral blood and bone marrow samples.
27. Captures images on a computerized system and prepares karyotypes for final reports.
28. Prepares final chromosome analysis and reports from culture initiation to final analysis of karyotypes.
29. Demonstrates sterile techniques and basic measuring and uses laboratory equipment without assistance.
30. Assists as needed to perform other related duties and special projects as required.
31. Accepts other duties as assigned.
Required Skills
1. Requires a high degree of care and attention with strict adherence to defined clinical testing protocols.
2. Demonstrated skills in technical data interpretation and ability to troubleshoot.
3. Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite, specifically Word, Excel, Outlook, and general working knowledge of Internet for business use.
4. Ability to work in a fast-past, deadline driven environment.

Required Experience
1. Requires a Bachelor of Science in biology or related field.
2. Six or more years experience in high complexity testing in cytogenetics.
3. Current NCA certification (CLSp(CG)) required.
4. Current NCA certification in Cytogenetics (CLSp(CG)) preferred
