Why do the Makaw whalers of Puget Sound describe the orca as "One step above God"? Why is the orca the most respected and revered creature among all the tribes of the Northwest coast? Fact: the orca is the only dominant predator on earth - there are three others, the lion, wolf and human - that does not make war on its own kind. Fact: the orca has the most stable society known. Fact: there is no record of orcas ever preying on humans. Fact: all the coastal tribes tell a common story about their history of relationship with the orca, that orcas never attacked them until they attacked the orca. Then, they say, the orca attacked them but only the culprits who had attacked the orcas. Maybe the orca is one step above us?
