SPLASH! As the Waterfront Director, you will be expected to use your leadership skills to oversee and supervise Tanglewood’s waterfront program. The waterfront is located on the Ducktrap River which is pristine and slow-moving, but the water is naturally dark from tannins and teeming with life. Campers either love being in the river or choose not to swim. Tanglewood’s goal is to help non-swimmers learn to swim, to provide opportunities for other campers to improve their swimming and water safety skills, and to enable all to enjoy the natural experience of freshwater swimming.

1. Set up and maintain a safe waterfront to be used for mixed-age swimming activities
2. Train staff regarding their responsibilities for the waterfront program; assess and record the ability of other lifeguards; work with staff lifeguards to set up weekly schedules for times when campers are swimming
3. Provide on-going support, training, and assessment for all waterfront staff throughout the summer
4. Conduct daily checks of the waterfront facility for safety, cleanliness, and working order
5. Evaluate each camper’s swimming ability at the beginning of every camp session
6. Lifeguard during free swims, and other times as appropriate
7. Lifeguard for group outings to the seashore and canoe trips on local ponds
8. Utilize and/or create systems to ensure safety of all swimmers: whistles, buddy checks, etc.
9. Teach up to three swim lessons/electives per day utilizing lesson plans; teach proper usage of equipment; keep records of swimmer’s progress
10. Participate in staff meetings and scheduled staff training events
11. Additional responsibilities may be assigned as required
12. NOTE: This position is coupled with that of a camp counselor. It is expected that in addition to fulfilling the duties of the waterfront director that applicants will also live in a cabin with campers and, along with a co-counselor, create the necessary atmosphere for a positive camp experience. staff/camper ratio = 1:4
