If you are seeking employment right now there are a number of things you need to know to be successful.
Resume writing services want you to believe that if you spend money on their resume writing skills, it will be the "MAGIC POTION" to attract employment. This couldn't be further from the truth!
Now, don't get me wrong, I'm not saying that the quality of your marketing documents (Cover Letters, Resume, Follow up Letters, Thank you Notes) aren't important. But it is ONLY one piece of the overall campaign. It is NOT about a job search anymore, it is a marketing campaign and you are the product. Every part of that campaign MUST be stellar in order to differentiate yourself from the competition.
With every new position you see posted on CareerBuilder, Monster, etc., there are between 500-5,000 applicants! Do you truly believe that all you need is a well written resume to be one of the top candidates? Absolutely not.
Of course that is necessary to keep the process moving and to have them want to now speak with you.
Consider this: The job of the resume is to get the phone interview, not to get the job or position. The job of the phone interview is to be invited for a face-to-face meeting. Too many job seekers offer too much or too little information during the phone interview, end up shooting themselves in the foot and never get invited for the formal interview. So, the resume did it's job but it didn't help with the next step.
Example #2...You made it through the phone interview and were invited for the face-to-face interview but another candidate was selected for the position. WHY? Obviously you were not IMPRESSIVE enough and didn't differentiate yourself. I hope I am making myself clear. There are multiple facets to this process. Things have changed dramatically over the past few years in how to properly market yourself.
Then there's the whole unadvertised job market that most individuals have no clue on how to approach properly. (this is where most of the success is happening because of less competition.)
There's a lot more to consider that I could elaborate on but this posting would be way too long.
