Channel Islands Harbor –The 5th Annual Channel Islands Harbor Safe Boating Expo will take place on Saturday, May 22 from 9:00 AM to 4:00 PM at the Coast Guard station at 4201 S. Victoria Ave., Oxnard.
Watch exciting offshore helicopter, person in water and Fire Rescue Demonstrations by: Ventura County Sheriff’s Rescue, Ventura County Fire Dept., Channel Islands Harbor Patrol, and US Coast Guard Helicopter Rescue.
Boaters with fire extinguishers and EPIRBs will receive a free inspection and can have their marine VFH radio with a distress button MMSI registered. Bring your expired flares for disposal and receive a discount toward flare replacement. The event is free to the public.
“Local vendors will demonstrate the latest in safety products, first aid and how to deploy a life raft. Hands on training for the proper use of a fire extinguisher, shooting a flare will be available and the latest types and styles of life jackets will be demonstrated,” said Henry Goldman, member of the US Coast Guard Auxiliary and chairman of this year’s event.
The Coast Guard Station as well as the 87-foot cutter Blacktip will be open for public tours and rides as well as the 41-foot utility boat. And, boaters can receive a free vessel safety examination with trailerable boats at the Channel Islands Harbor public boat launch.
There will be food and beverages sponsored by the Pacific Corinthian Youth Foundation with proceeds going to support the youth sailing program in channel Islands Harbor.
“Each year the free event grows in popularity. Several hundred people have been in attendance in the past few years. It’s not only a great educational event, it is lots of fun, too,” Goldman stated.
