"Buddy" is about 11 years old. He is a Border Collie, very well-behaved, and loves to play (especially loves to "herd" his "sheep"--a rubber ball). He is getting older, and will be mellow if nobody has time to pay attention to him. But he still has some spunk and responds enthusiastically when anyone offers to play. He knows a few party tricks (he can "pray" and shake paws, etc.).

Buddy does fine with other pets--at least calm or indifferent ones like cats or quieter dogs (not hyper ones that jump all over him--they make him nervous). Buddy also does fine with children--loves them and is generally gentle with them, doesn't get irritated with them. He has been known to nip people's hands a couple of times--but never maliciously, always in the process of trying to grab a rope toy or hold onto a ball--when he thinks it's playing. Buddy's previous owner was activities director in the Alzheimer's unit of a nursing home, and Buddy LOVED to "go to work" with her. He does great with the elderly and infirm--doesn't freak out or run around. He will lay his head on their knees and patiently play with them, even if the speed is a little slower-paced. We think Buddy would go "to work" at a retirement center every day without pay if we let him.

The main reason why Buddy needs a new home is that he gets skittery during thunderstorms and when jets scream overhead. Whenever bad storms or the air show come to town, Buddy has to be given about 1/4 of a prescribed pill to make him sleepy and calm his nerves. His current owner is moving to Oklahoma near an Air Force base, and Buddy couldn't handle well the noise that would come with such close proximity to the base.

Border Collies are an interesting and endearing breed of dogs, and Buddy is one well-loved Border Collie. He needs a home (perhaps with an older, retired person who wouldn't have to be away at work all day). Buddy has spent far too many hours cooped up alone in a kennel or waiting for his owners to get off work and spend time with him. He probably has only a few years left, but his previous owners would love for those years to be spent as quality time with trustworthy, loving new owners.

Please contact Melody (815.979.8495) or Joy (815.209.0922) if you are interested in visiting Buddy and/or having him visit with you to see how he might do in the context of your home.
