(Akron, Ohio) On Saturday, April 24th 2010, men from Akron and the surrounding communities will slip on, buckle up and step out in women’s high heeled shoes to protest rape, sexual assault and gender violence during the 5th Annual Walk a Mile in Her Shoes, The International Men’s March to Stop Rape Sexual Assault and Gender Violence. Proceeds from the event will benefit the Rape Crisis Center of Medina and Summit Counties.
The march is scheduled to begin at 11:00AM with registration starting at 10:00AM at the Akron Civic Theatre located at 182 South Main Street. Opening ceremonies will begin at 11:00AM with a post-walk reception and award ceremony to follow at 12:15 PM. Men, women, and children are invited to participate and walk-in participants are welcome. Men are encouraged (but not required) to walk in women’s shoes and participants are being asked to obtain a minimum of $20.00 in sponsorship donations. Prizes will be awarded to top fundraising teams and individuals. Special prizes will be awarded to the men wearing the highest heels and the “hottest” heels.
The Rape Crisis Center of Medina and Summit Counties serves sexual assault survivors and their loved ones. We believe, support, and empower survivors to heal and rebuild their lives. Rape Crisis Center client services include: a 24-hour crisis hotline, hospital and justice system advocacy, and in-office crisis intervention and education. All client services are confidential, based on the needs of the individual and provided free of charge. For the wider community, the Rape Crisis Center raises awareness about sexual violence, provides prevention education, and conducts a volunteer program to support the work of the agency.
