Greetings from Camp Buckskin! We are a traditional overnight summer camp working with children with social skill and academic needs. We are located in the Superior National Forest in Northern Minnesota near the Boundary Waters Canoe Area in Ely, MN. We've served over 8 000 young people during our past 50 summers.
Since 1959, Camp Buckskin has been serving campers with AD/HD, Learning Disabilities, and Aspersers to help them achieve greater success in their lives.
Our teachers will teach in our reading/writing program. This academic program is one of six main activities that the campers attend daily, Monday-Friday. Teachers will have three classes in the morning and three classes in the afternoon, each lasting 50 minutes. The average class size is 3-4 students.
Teachers monitor and note the camper's progress. They establish goals that are written into contracts for each camper to work on. At the end of each session the teacher writes a comprehensive report for each camper in his or her class. This report describes the reading program, pre and post test scores on oral reading comprehension and word identification assessments. The report also includes books the campers read, activities/coursework completed, what teaching methods or learning strategies worked best. The child's overall behavior/attitude while in reading, and any other recommendations are also included.
Teachers also are involved in helping during the evening and weekend programs, meal times, and all over camp on a daily basis. For example, on the weekends teachers can help with sports tournaments, assist counselors with cabins, monitor the swim area, or go canoeing or hiking.
Qualifications: Current teaching license is required. Preferred certifications: current CPR and First Aid.
We offer compensation + room/board for the summer! Compensation is based on prior experience plus certifications.
