One-Year AmeriCorps*VISTA Position @ Catholic Charities of Santa Clara County
NOW AVAILABLE!

For more than 35 years, AmeriCorps*VISTA members have been helping bring individuals and communities out of poverty. Members serve full-time for a year in nonprofits, public agencies, and faith-based groups throughout the country, working to fight illiteracy, improve health services, create businesses, increase housing opportunities, or bridge the digital divide.

Catholic Charities of Santa Clara County’s Day Break II Asian Respite & Caregiver Support Services program is currently looking for a Mandarin-speaking AmeriCorps*VISTA member to serve from April 2010-April 2011. This program serves low-income Chinese and Vietnamese family caregivers and their older loved ones who are suffering from Alzheimer’s disease or other dementia, helping the caregivers to maintain a successful home care environment and avoid premature or inappropriate institutionalization for their dependent elders. The high cost of institutionalization impoverishes families; services that support these low-income Asian families in providing homecare for their dependent elders prevent them from becoming impoverished.

Key strategies will include: targeted outreach to low-income Asian caregiving families in Santa Clara County; intensified efforts in volunteer recruitment and training; increased emphasis on fund development; and ongoing educational events that empower Asian caregivers to become more effective advocates for much-needed culturally and linguistically competent caregiver support services. We seek a motivated, compassionate, Mandarin-speaking VISTA member who will assist us with these activities, helping us to expand our Day Break II Asian Respite & Caregiver Support Services program to optimal capacity and sustainability. This will enable us to serve greater numbers of low-income Chinese and Vietnamese caregivers and their dependent elders as the population continues to rapidly age over the next several years.

BECOME A VISTA MEMBER TODAY!
